Chisinau, 10 September /MOLDPRES/ - The administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark, and the leadership of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) discussed prospects for cooperation in the electoral field today. CEC head Eugeniu Stirbu highlighted the assistance which the UNDP has been providing Moldova with during polls, and stressed the contribution of the UNDP project Electoral Support for Moldova, according to a CEC press release. Stirbu informed the high guest about the results of the constitutional referendum held on 5 September 2010. He underlined the need to continue collaboration to implement the electronic voters register, create a centre of continuous training in the election area and voters' civic education. The secretary of the Central Electoral Commission, Iurie Ciocan, spoke about the importance of the electronic register as a solution to improving the quality of the electoral lists and the prospects of using IT in the electoral process. Referring to the recent referendum, Helen Clark said that nobody doubts the fact that it had been well organized. She stressed that the people did not come to vote from various reasons, and that the decision to participate or not is up to them. The UN official showed willingness to further support the consolidation of the Central Electoral Commission's capacities to organize free and fair elections in Moldova.
